Hanuman Chalisa
One of the most revered devotional hymns in the Hindu tradition, dedicated to Hanuman. Composed by Goswāmī Tulsīdāsa in the 16th century in Awadhi (40 verses plus introductory and closing Dohās).

श्री गुरु चरण सरोज रज निज मन मुकुरु सुधारि।
śrī guru carana saroja raja nija manu mukuru sudhāri |
Having polished the mirror of my mind with the dust of the lotus feet of the Guru.
Tendo polido o espelho da minha mente com a poeira dos pés de lótus do Gurudeva.
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु जो दायकु फल चारि॥
baraṇaūṁ raghubara bimala jasu jo dāyaku phala cāri ||
I sing the spotless glory of the best of Raghu (Rāma), who bestows the four fruits: dharma (religion), artha (wealth), kama (pleasure), and moksha (liberation).

बुद्धि हीन तनु जानिके सुमिरौं पवन कुमार।
buddhi-hīna tanu jānike sumirauṁ pavana-kumāra |
Knowing myself to be lacking in wisdom, I invoke the son of the wind (Hanumān).

बल बुद्धि विद्या देहु मोहिं हरहु क्लेश विकार॥
bala buddhi vidyā dehu mohiṁ harahu kleśa vikāra ||
Grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge; remove my afflictions and impurities.

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुण सागर।
jaya hanumāna jñāna guṇa sāgara
Victory to Thee, O Hanumān, ocean of wisdom and virtue.

जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
jaya kapīsa tihuṁ loka ujāgara ||
Victory to the Lord of the Vānaras (monkeys), who illuminates the three worlds.

राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा।
rāma dūta atulita bala dhāmā
Messenger of Rāma and repository of immeasurable strength.

अञ्जनि पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
añjani-putra pavana-suta nāmā ||
Son of Añjanī and of the wind (Pavana), by that name you are known.

महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी।
mahābīra bikrama bajaraṅgī
O Mahāvīra (Hanumān), great hero, of mighty valour like a thunderbolt, thunderbolt-bodied (Vajrāṅgī).

कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
kumati nivāra sumati ke saṅgī ||
Remover of wicked thoughts (kumati) and companion to the good-minded (sumati).

कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा।
kāñcana barana birāja subesā
Your complexion shines golden; you shine with beautiful attire.

कानन कुंडल कुंचित केसा॥
kānana kuṇḍala kuñcita kesā ||
Glittering earrings (kuṇḍala) and curly hair.

हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै।
hātha bajra aura dhvajā birājai
You have a thunderbolt-like mace in one hand and Śrī Rāma's victory flag in the other; they shine in your hands.

काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
kāṁdhe mūṁja janeū sājai ||
Across your shoulder is the sacred thread made of muñjā grass.

शंकर सुवन केसरी नन्दन।
śaṅkara suvana kesarī nandana
You are the incarnation of Śiva (Śaṅkara) and the son of Keśarī.

तेज प्रताप महा जग बन्दन॥
teja pratāpa mahā jaga bandana ||
You are adored by the entire world for your great splendour and might.

विद्यावान गुणी अति चातुर।
vidyāvāna gunī ati cātura
You are supremely wise, virtuous and intelligent.

राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
rāma kāja karibe ko ātura ||
Always eager to accomplish Lord Rāma's work.

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया।
prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā
Your greatest pleasure is listening to the Lord's glories and story.

राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥
rāma lakhana sītā mana basiyā ||
Śrī Rāma, Śrī Lakṣmaṇa and Śrī Sītā always dwell in your heart.
Śrī Rāma, Śrī Lakṣmaṇa e Śrī Sītā residem sempre no seu coração.
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा।
sūkṣma rūpa dhari siyahiṁ dikhāvā
Assuming a tiny form you appeared before Sītā.
Assumindo uma forma minúscula apareceu perante Sītā.
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
bikaṭa rūpa dhari laṅkā jarāvā ||
In awesome, fearsome guise you burned the city of Laṅkā.
Em aspecto terrível queimou a cidade de Laṅkā.
भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे।
bhīma rūpa dhari asura saṁhāre
Taking a dreadful, mighty form you destroyed the asuras (demons).
Tomando uma forma temível e gigantesca destruiu os demônios.
रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे॥
rāmacandra ke kāja saṁvāre ||
You accomplished the mission of Lord Rāmacandra with great finesse.
Cumpriu a missão do Senhor Rāmacandra com grande fineza.
लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये।
lāya sañjīvana lakhana jiyāye
Bringing the life-giving Mṛta-Sañjīvaṇī herb, you revived (the unconscious) Lakṣmaṇa.
Trazendo a erva Mṛta-Sañjīvaṇī que dá vida, reviveu Lakṣmaṇa.
श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
śrī raghubīra haraṣi ura lāye ||
Śrī Raghubīra (Rāma) joyfully embraced you to his heart.
Śrī Raghubīra (Rāma) o abraçou jubiloso ao peito.
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई।
raghupati kīnhī bahuta baḍāī
Greatly did the Lord of the Raghus (Rāma) praise you.
Grandemente o Senhor dos Raghu (Rāma) o elogiou.
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
tuma mama priya bharatahi sama bhāī ||
Saying: "You are as dear to me as my very own brother Bharat."
Dizendo: «É tão querido para mim como o meu próprio irmão Bharat.»
सहस बदन तुम्हारो जस गावैं।
sahasa badana tumharo yaśa gāvaiṁ
Thousands of mouths (the thousand-mouthed serpent Śeṣa) sing your glories.
Mil bocas (a serpente Śeṣa) cantam as suas glórias.
अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं॥
asa kahi śrīpati kaṇṭha lagāvaiṁ ||
With these words, Sītā's Lord (Śrīpati—Lord Rāma) drew you to himself, embracing you to his heart.
Com estas palavras, o Senhor de Sītā (Śrīpati—Rāma) o abraçou ao peito.
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा।
sanakādika brahmādi munīśā
Sanaka and the sages (Kumāras), Brahmā, the gods and the great sages.
Sanaka, os (Kumāras), Brahmā, os deuses e os grandes sábios.
नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥
nārada śārada sahita ahīśā ||
Nārada, Sarasvatī and Ahīśā the lord of serpents cannot completely describe your glories.

यम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते।
yama kubera digapāla jahāṁ te
Yama and Kubera along with the Dikpāla devatas (the eight guardian deities) keep singing your fame.
Yama, Kubera e os Dikpāla (deidades guardiãs das direções) continuam a cantar a sua fama.
कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥
kabi kobida kahi sake kahāṁ te ||
How can ordinary poets and knowers of the Vedas fully describe your glory?
Como poderão poetas e conhecedores dos Vedas descrever totalmente a sua glória?
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा।
tuma upakāra sugrīvahiṁ kīnhā
You did Sugrīva a great favour—you made him meet Lord Rāma.
Fez a Sugrīva um grande favor — fez com que ele encontrasse o Senhor Rāma.
राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥
rāma milāya rāja pada dīnhā ||
You gave him kingship [over Kiṣkindhā] and refuge at the feet of King Rāma.

तुम्हरो मन्त्र विभीषण माना।
tumharo mantra bibhīṣana mānā
By heeding your advice, Vibhīṣaṇa became the king of Laṅkā.

लंकेश्वर भए सब जग जाना॥
laṅkeśvara bhae saba jaga jānā ||
This is known throughout the world.

जुग सहस्त्र जोजन पर भानू।
juga sahastra jojana para bhānū
You leapt towards the sun, situated millions of yojanas away.
Saltou em direção ao sol, situado a milhões de yojanas de distância.
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥
līlyo tāhi madhura phala jānū ||
You tried to swallow it because you mistook it to be a sweet fruit.
Tentou engoli-lo pois pensou ser uma doce fruta.
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं।
prabhu mudrikā meli mukha māhīṁ
Placing Lord Rāma's ring in your mouth (as a token for Sītā).
Colocando o anel do Senhor Rāma na sua boca (como token para Sītā).
जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥
jaladhi lāṁghi gaye acaraja nāhīṁ ||
No wonder you leaped across the vast ocean.
Não é de admirar que tenha atravessado o vasto oceano.
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते।
durgama kāja jagata ke jete
Any task that is difficult or apparently impossible in the world.
Qualquer tarefa difícil ou aparentemente impossível do mundo.
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥
sugama anugraha tumhare tete ||
Becomes easy to attain by your grace.
Torna-se fácil de alcançar pela sua graça.
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे।
rāma duāre tuma rakhavāre
You are the ever vigilant guard at the door of Śrī Rāma's abode.
É o guarda vigilante à porta da morada de Śrī Rāma.
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
hota na ājñā binu paisāre ||
Without your permission no one can enter.
Sem a sua permissão ninguém pode entrar.
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना।
saba sukha lahai tumhārī saranā
By taking shelter in you one can enjoy all happiness.
Ao refugiar-se em você pode-se gozar toda a felicidade.
तुम रक्षक काहू को डरना॥
tuma rakṣaka kāhū ko ḍaranā ||
Anyone under your protection has nothing to fear.
Quem está sob a sua proteção não tem nada a temer.
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै।
āpana teja samhāro āpai
When you remember your powers and roar.
Quando se lembra dos seus poderes e ruge.
तीनों लोक हाँक ते काँपै॥
tīnoṁ loka hāṁka te kāṁpai ||
All three worlds tremble with fear before your might.
Os três mundos tremem de medo perante o seu poder.
भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै।
bhūta piśāca nikaṭa nahiṁ āvai
Ghosts, evil spirits (bhūtas) and hideous demons (piśācas) never come near.
Fantasmas, espíritos malignos (bhūtas) e demônios (piśācas) nunca se aproximam.
महावीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
mahābīra jaba nāma sunāvai ||
They never come near him who utters your name, Mahāvīra.

Among devotees worldwide it is believed that chanting the Hanumān Chālīsā invokes Hanumān's divine intervention and wards off negative energies and spirits.

नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा।
nāsai roga harai saba pīrā
All diseases and sufferings are destroyed.

जपत निरन्तर हनुमत बीरा॥
japata nirantara hanumata bīrā ||
By the constant repetition (japa) of the name of the hero Hanumān.
Pela repetição constante (japa) do nome do herói Hanumān.
संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै।
saṅkaṭa teṁ hanumāna chuḍāvai
Hanumān frees from all obstacles and difficulties.
Hanumān liberta de todos os obstáculos e dificuldades.
मन क्रम वचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
mana krama vācana dhyāna jo lāvai ||
Anyone who meditates on Lord Hanumān by thought (mana), word (vācana) and deed (krama).
Quem medita no Senhor Hanumān por pensamento, palavra e ação.
Verses 27-28: All diseases and sufferings are destroyed by the constant repetition of the name of Hanumān. Anyone who meditates on Lord Hanumān by thought, word and deed is freed from all obstacles and difficulties.
Versos 27-28: Todas as doenças e sofrimentos são destruídos pela repetição constante do nome de Hanumān. Quem medita no Senhor Hanumān por pensamento, palavra e ação é libertado de todos os obstáculos e dificuldades.
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा।
saba para rāma tapasvī rājā
Śrī Rāma, the Lord of Ascetics (tapasvī-rājā), is the Ruler of all beings.
Śrī Rāma, o Senhor dos Ascetas, é o Governante de todos os seres.
तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
tina ke kāja sakala tuma sājā ||
And even then you have accomplished all His difficult tasks with ease.
E ainda assim cumpriu todas as Suas tarefas difíceis com facilidade.
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै।
aura manoratha jo koī lāvai
Whatever wish or desire a devotee cherishes and brings to Him.
Qualquer desejo que um devoto acalente e Lhe apresente.
सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
soī amita jīvana phala pāvai ||
Lord Hanumān grants that fruit of fulfilled and limitless life.
O Senhor Hanumān concede esse fruto de vida plena e ilimitada.
चारों जुग प्रताप तुम्हारा।
cāroṁ juga pratāpa tumhārā
Your glory is spread throughout the four yugas (Kṛta, Tretā, Dvāpara and Kali).
A sua glória estende-se pelos quatro yugas (Kṛta, Tretā, Dvāpara e Kali).
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
hai parasiddha jagata ujiyārā ||
Your brilliance is known in the whole world; the world is illumined by you.
O seu brilho é conhecido em todo o mundo; o mundo resplandece por você.
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे।
sādhu santa ke tuma rakhavāre
You are the protetor of sādhus and saints.
É o protetor dos sādhus e santos.
असुर निकन्दन राम दुलारे॥
asura nikandana rāma dulāre ||
The destroyer of demons and the beloved of Lord Rāma.
O destruidor de demônios e o amado do Senhor Rāma.
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता।
aṣṭa siddhi nau nidhi ke dātā
You are the bestower of the eight supernatural powers (siddhis) and the nine divine treasures (nidhis).
É o concedente dos oito poderes sobrenaturais (siddhis) e dos nove tesouros divinos (nidhis).
अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
asa bara dīna jānakī mātā ||
Such is the boon Mother Jānakī (Sītā) has given you.
Foi essa a bênção que a Mãe Jānakī (Sītā) lhe concedeu.
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा।
rāma rasāyana tumhare pāsā
You enjoy the sweet nectar elixir of Rāma-nāma (the name of Rāma); you always have it with you.
Saboreia o doce néctar do Rāma-nāma (o elixir do nome de Rāma); tem sempre consigo.
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
sadā raho raghupati ke dāsā ||
You are always present in the service of Śrī Rāma and remain eternally His servant.
Está sempre presente ao serviço de Śrī Rāma e permanece eternamente Seu servo.
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै।
tumhare bhajana rāma ko pāvai
By reciting your qualities and chanting your name one can reach Lord Rāma.
Ao recitar as suas qualidades e cantar o seu nome pode-se alcançar o Senhor Rāma.
जनम जनम के दुःख बिसरावै॥
janama janama ke duḥkha bisarāvai ||
And get freed from the sorrows of many lives.
E libertar-se das tristezas de muitas vidas.
Verses 35-36: By reciting your qualities and chanting your name one can reach Lord Rāma and get freed from the sorrows of many lives. At last, when he leaves his physical body, he enters the eternal abode of Śrī Rāma.
Versos 35-36: Ao recitar as suas qualidades e cantar o seu nome pode-se alcançar o Senhor Rāma e libertar-se das tristezas de muitas vidas. Por fim, ao deixar o corpo físico, entra na morada eterna de Śrī Rāma.
अन्त काल रघुबर पुर जाई।
anta kāla raghubara pura jāī
At last, when he leaves his physical body, he enters the eternal abode of Raghubara (Śrī Rāma).

जहाँ जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई॥
jahāṁ janma haribhakta kahāī ||
Or is born on earth as God's devotee (hari-bhakta).

और देवता चित्त न धरई।
aura devatā citta na dharaī
There is no need to fix the mind on or worship any other deity.
Não é preciso fixar a mente nem adorar nenhuma outra divindade.
हनुमत सेई सर्व सुख करई॥
hanumata seī sarva sukha karaī ||
By just worshipping Hanumān one attains all happiness.
Apenas adorando Hanumān alcança-se toda a felicidade.
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा।
saṅkaṭa kaṭai miṭai saba pīrā
All suffering, distress and pain are cut away and vanish.
Todo o sofrimento, dificuldade e dor desaparecem.
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
jo sumirai hanumata balabīrā ||
For one who remembers the mighty and brave Hanumān (balabīrā).
Para quem se lembra do poderoso e bravo Hanumān.
जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाईं।
jai jai jai hanumāna gosāīṁ
Victory, victory, victory to Hanumān, O Lord (Gosāīṁ)!
Vitória, vitória, vitória a Hanumān, Senhor (Gosāīṁ)!
कृपा करहु गुरु देव की नाईं॥
kṛpā karahu guru deva kī nāīṁ ||
Be compassionate to me and bestow your grace on me as my Guru and Lord!
Seja compassivo comigo e conceda-me a sua graça como meu Guru e Senhor!
जो शत बार पाठ कर कोई।
jo śata bāra pāṭha kara koī
Whoever recites or reads this (Hanumān Chālīsā) a hundred times.
Quem recitar ou ler este (Hanumān Chālīsā) cem vezes.
छूटहि बन्दि महा सुख होई॥
chūṭahi bandi mahā sukha hoī ||
Becomes free of all types of bondage and enjoys supreme Bliss.
Liberta-se de todos os tipos de cativeiro e goza a Suprema Bem-aventurança.
Verses 40-41: Whoever recites this Hanumān Chālīsā a hundred times becomes free of all bondage and enjoys supreme Bliss. Whoever chants it is sure to obtain spiritual perfections (Siddhis). May Lord Śiva (Gaurīsā) be my witness!

जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा।
jo yaha paḍhai hanumāna calīsā
Whoever reads or chants this Hanumān Chālīsā.
Quem ler ou cantar este Hanumān Chālīsā.
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
hoya siddhi sākhī gaurīsā ||
Is sure to obtain all spiritual perfections (Siddhis). May Lord Śiva (Gaurīsā) be my witness!
Obterá certamente as perfeições espirituais (Siddhis). Que o Senhor Śiva (Gaurīsā) seja minha testemunha!
तुलसीदास सदा हरी चेरा।
tulasīdāsa sadā hari cerā
Tulasīdās, the writer of these verses, is the eternal servant of Hari (God).
Tulsīdās, o escritor destes versos, é o servo eterno de Hari (Deus).
कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा॥
kījai nātha hṛdaya mahaṁ ḍerā ||
O Lord (Nātha), please make my heart your abode.
Ó Senhor (Nātha), faça do meu coração a sua morada.
पवन तनय संकट हरन मंगल मूरति रूप।
pavana tanaya saṅkaṭa harana maṅgala mūrati rūpa |
O Son of the Wind (pavana), remover of difficulties, of auspicious form.
Ó Filho do Vento (pavana), removedor de dificuldades, de forma auspiciosa.
राम लखन सीता सहित हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥
rāma lakhana sītā sahita hṛdaya basahu sura bhūpa ||
O Lord of the gods (sura bhūpa), please always reside in my heart together with Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā.
